Each box is a real page and each path is its real URL. Indentation is depth: how many steps down from the homepage a page sits in the structure. The bars inside each box sketch what that page is made of — a hub of cards, a page of body copy, a form, a tool — so you can see the site change shape as it gets more specific.
None of the decisions below are about taste. Each one is a trade we make on client sites for a reason we can say out loud, which is the actual test of whether a structure was designed or just accumulated.
Seven services, seven pages, rather than one long page with seven headings. A buyer comparing two contractors searches for the specific thing they need, and a page that is only about that thing is the one that can answer them — and the one a search engine can rank for it.
The deepest page on the site is three steps from the homepage. Depth is how importance gets read: a page that takes five clicks to reach looks like a page the business itself does not think matters, and it gets crawled and ranked accordingly.
The tree above is three levels deep, but the header menu lists every service outright, so nothing is more than one click from anywhere. Structure is how a site is organised for meaning. Navigation is a shortcut through it. Confusing the two is how sites end up with a flat menu of thirty links and no shape at all.
This page is for people. /sitemap.xml is the machine-readable version search engines read, listing the same pages with the date each one last changed — it is declared in /robots.txt and submitted to the search consoles. The same architecture, told twice, because the two readers need different things.
